Some three thousand Bulgarian police forces and supporters have staged a rally in Sofia in protest to planned salary cuts meant to readjust the national spending plan.

Firefighters, members of the army and other Ministry of Interior employees joined police officers in capital's 'peaceful' Saturday protest.

The protesters called on the government to annul proposed budget policies that would cut their salaries by 12.1 percent via forcing them to pay their own social security, reports indicate.

"We get our privileges as compensation for giving up basic human rights. Policemen, firefighters risk their own lives daily to guarantee the lives of others," AFP quoted police union chief Valentin Popov as saying.

The demonstrators, in civilian clothing, observed a minute of silence for colleagues fallen on the job and demanded better working conditions and reforms for the country's law enforcement sector.

The Bulgarian government has been grappling with insufficient income and making an attempt to avoid a big budget deficit.
