Heavy rains have caused a 300-foot-long breach in Lake Delhi Dam, threatening towns downstream and making hundreds of people flee for safety in the US state of Iowa.

David Fink, Lake Delhi dam operation manager, called the breach “a catastrophic release of water.”

"It's going to have a hell of a lot of velocity,” he told The Des Moines Register on Saturday.

Video showed massive amounts of water violently gushing from the pool behind the dam into the Maquoketa River below. Nearby homes and buildings were under water up to their eaves.

Warning sirens were sounding in Hopkinton, a town of about 700 residents who were given minutes to flee approaching floodwaters.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver told CNN that nearly 10 inches of rain had recently fallen in a 12-hour period in the area and was "too much water for the dam to hold."

Culver also described the dam failure as unprecedented.

The roads on either side of the dam crumpled as a result of the heavy rainfall. Officials do not know if the entire dam will give way.

There have been no reports of injuries so far.
